THE ASSESSMENT

Assessment is the comprehensive process of obtaining information about an individual and family. Specific evaluation methods and ongoing evaluation during the intervention are all considered part of comprehensive assessment. An assessment is comprised of measurable, data-based information gathered from several sources, and reported in objective manner, so that it is an accurate description of the behaviour exhibited. The intent is to assess concerns or weaknesses whilst also identifying strengths. [Dunn,W., 1991]

Assessment is the process of gathering information for the purpose of making a decision. [Bailey & Woolery, 1989].

The Therapy in Praxis Limited assessment process includes comprehensive assessment & specific programme planning for effective treatment intervention.

Assessment is a crucial primary core skill. The ability to conduct assessments and to analyse the results in order to plan therapy or intervention in an area of occupational performance or dysfunction, is an essential element.

Therapy in Praxis Limited will use different evaluation procedures including standardised assessments in order to identify a child’s major underlying dysfunctions :

Sensory Processing                                                                                                                             Praxis ~ ‘Praxis is to the physical world what speech is to the social world !’

Practical ability includes 3 components:

Ideation—forming the idea & knowing what to do

Motor-planning—organising the sequence of movements involved in the task

Execution—carry out the planned movements in a smooth sequence

Perceptual Functioning

            - visual

            - auditory

            - tactile

Motor controls, motor skills and motor coordination

Pre-academic Skills

Handwriting & Graphomotor Skills including use of classroom equipment

Emotional Development, Confidence Behaviour & Behavioural

Organisation for Learning

Independence Skills

Play & Learning

Assessment Components

Sensory Processing

The assessment of the various aspects of sensory processing status of the vestibular, proprioceptive, tactile, auditory & visual systems & the major behaviour manifestations of deficits in integration of sensory inputs from these systems.

Praxis                                                                                                                                               Praxis is the ability by which an individual works out how to use their body in skilled tasks like playing with toys, using a pencil or a fork, building a structure, straightening up a room or engaging in many other activities and occupations.

Perceptual Functions                                                                                                                                 The child’s ability to process, analyse & interpret the information that he / she receives through different sensory channels. Assessment of the level of conscious / unconscious awareness of his / her body in terms of knowing body parts, relative positions of body parts & ability to orientate oneself through spatial environments.

Motor Coordination                                                                                                                         Assessment of basic components of different gross & fine motor coordination & how this may affect a child’s motor performance & learning.

Pre-academic Skills                                                                                                                                    Based on the results of sensory processing, praxis, perceptual function & motor coordination, we can correlate it with the child’s difficulties in academic learning, including PE.

Handwriting                                                                                                                                    Involves motor control (or more specifically practice ability) & perceptual functions, especially ability to interpret what he / she sees & puts into motor expression, i.e. visual-motor integration

Emotional, Confidence & Behavioural Organisation                                                                               Evaluation of the spectrum of emotional behavioural problems which may or may not be related to his / her dysfunction in certain sensory systems, i.e. hyperactive tactile systems

Independence & Communication Abilities, [social skills, etc.]                                                                          The accurate interpretation of the assessment results is the most important prerequisite for the effective planning of any therapeutic intervention [therapy].

Therapy in Praxis Limited will adopt a variety of treatment approaches in order to provide a comprehensive service for the child.

Typically the Occupational Therapist may use a sensory motor approach, perceptual motor training and sensory integrative therapy, a highly specialised treatment approach used specifically by a postgraduate trained Therapist in sensory integrative evaluation and analysis.

The philosophy and methodologies particularly of Occupational Therapy support the therapeutic uses of ‘activities’ to facilitate and carry over the effect of therapy.

A therapy session is carried out on an individual basis and a home / school programme integrated into classroom / PE activities, where appropriate and as prescribed during the assessment in order to carry over the effect of therapy and maximise outcomes.
